What is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is an estimate of the amount of energy expended
while at rest in a comfortable environment with your digestive system inactive.
The amount of energy your body is using
in this state is for the bare mimimum required to for the
functioning of your vital organs,
such as heart, lungs, brain, liver, kidneys,
muscles, and skin.
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) or the similar Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)
is by far the largest component of total caloric expenditure per day.
Since these measurements are assuming your body is at rest, they need to be
adjusted by a factor to account for your daily activity. In
the 1990s and 2000s, several studies found that the BMR estimates typically are
within 5% of the true caloric expenditures, so the results provide good estimates only.
